Dear all,
You are receiving this email either because you are old acquaintances of the Health Informatics Master programme, and you usually participate in the thesis process for said programme, or because we thought that your expertise could lead you to formulate some interesting theses proposals for the students in this Master.
It would be great if you could send me some topic proposals, according to your availability and your research interests, that you think could fit well with the Health Informatics students.
This is the format for the proposals:
* Title: The title of the proposed thesis topic.
* Description: A short (5-10 lines) description of the thesis topic
* Dataset: The dataset to be used, if it's already decided
* References: 1-3 references to frame the thesis proposal.
* Prerequisites: the prerequisites to choose this topic, if any
* Contact information: names and email addresses of the reference people for the topic
It would be great if you could send your topics as soon as possible, but it’s important that all topics are published before November 10th, so that the students have some time to contact you before the deadline for their proposals' submission.
Also, if you happen to know of some colleagues who might be interested in participating in this process, feel free to contact them.

Dear all,
Welcome to Yongchao’s predoc seminar on August 26 at 13:00-15:00 in M20.
Title: Exploring the Educational Utility of Pretrained Language Models
External reviewer: Prof. Filip Ginter, University of Turku
Internal reviewer (NBP): Prof. Panagiotis Papapetrou
Abstract
The advent of pretrained language models (PLMs) has revolutionized the field of natural language processing (NLP). Trained on extensive datasets, PLMs serve as foundational models for a myriad of NLP tasks. Over the past decade, various types of PLMs have emerged, ranging from static to contextual language models and from masked to autoregressive models, each offering unique ways of utilization and interaction.
This thesis explores these diverse PLM paradigms—embeddings, fine-tuning, prompt-based learning, and in-context learning—within the educational domain, where generative AI and PLMs are poised to effect significant transformation. By examining the application of these paradigms in educational settings, this work aims to highlight the potential of PLMs to enhance teaching and learning processes, thereby contributing to the ongoing evolution of technology-enhanced learning (TEL).
The exploration contributes to the educational domain by expanding knowledge on PLMs and demonstrating practical methods for integrating generative AI into educational practice. The studies presented in this thesis have concretely improved upon the state-of-the-art approaches for various tasks, enhancing current methods and theories in both the TEL and NLP domains. These advancements contribute to the evolution and improvement of both fields, offering innovative applications of AI in education while advancing the development of NLP technologies.
Welcome!
Best,
Aron
